Abstract
In the context of the profound university transformations of the 21st century, competency-based training can be consolidated as one of the approaches that results in a critical individual capable of solving diverse problems in specific situations. This article aims to evaluate the state of semiotic competence development in students of the Bachelor of Education in Spanish-Literature program. The study applied various empirical methods and techniques, such as documentary analysis, to methodological plans of the department, program, disciplines, and years. A survey of third-year students and teachers of the program at the Faculty of Secondary Education, University of Granma, during the 2022 academic year was also conducted. Classes were observed to obtain information that was then processed through an analytical-synthetic study and the qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the data obtained. The application of instruments revealed deficiencies in the development of semiotic competence that limit efficient communication in the work contexts of students of the Bachelor of Education in Spanish-Literature program. This confirmed the need for a didactic model for developing semiotic competence and a strategy to address this issue.
