Workshop system for adequate preparation for the start of hemodialysis treatment: a comprehensive psych pedagogical approach
Sistema de talleres para la adecuada preparación del inicio del tratamiento hemodialítico: un enfoque psicopedagógico integral
Abstract
Chronic kidney disease constitutes a process with multiple and complex implications that, in its final phase, demand hemodialysis as a fundamental form of treatment. In order to integrate the biopsychosocial aspects that condition psychopedagogical support to the health-disease process of patients who begin hemodialysis treatment, achieve adequate coping and strengthen psychological well-being, a system of workshops was designed for their preparation and that of the staff.
A predominantly qualitative mixed research was carried out consistent with the problem, the comprehensive psychopedagogical approach and the active methodology of the intervention proposal. The panel of experts who evaluated it positively highlighted the coherence, the capacity for transformation, the improvement in patient satisfaction, and its impact on quality of life. The pilot application made it possible to identify experiences related to stress, adaptation, frustration, confusion of personal identity, as well as the need for better preparation of the patient to begin treatment. It is concluded that it is necessary to enhance the patient's preparation for positive coping from the phases prior to hemodialysis treatment, that healthcare personnel require training in this regard and that the contextualization of the design must be strengthened.
