Keywords: Professional development, peer working, social transformation.

Abstract

Education presents enormous challenges for any education system, and the global need for quality education adds more responsibilities to those in charge of designing educational policies. The Agenda 2030, Sustainable Development Goal #4 (SDG 4), and the latest Summit for the Transformation of Education set a direction for governments to follow in implementing strategies such as attention to the professional development of teachers responsible for implementing policies in the classroom. Consequently, with better-trained teachers, the proposed goals can be achieved, and quality education can be offered to the population of Latin America and the Caribbean.

However, the teaching profession has a responsibility to humanity beyond these policies; that is why, teachers should strive for the best state of professional development, according to their context, will, and employer's facilities. This development ranges from initial training to the culmination of their working life. In this article, the reader can get an idea of what is intended in terms of professional development as a transformative element in Bogotá, Colombia, addressing the challenges and needs of a country that seeks a total culture of peace after 7 years of the end of the armed conflict with the FARC.
