Training for citizenship in Salvadorian higher education
La formación para la ciudadanía en la educación superior salvadoreña
Abstract
The main objective of this work was to determine the need for higher education institutions (HEIs), particularly universities, to decisively commit to the citizenship training of students.
It is argued that training for citizenship should not be limited to the primary, basic or middle levels of education, which constitutes a fundamental component of higher education as a way for universities to contribute more effectively to the comprehensive formation of the personality of students, future professionals. That a privileged way through which HEIs, particularly the University of El Salvador (UES), can fulfill their social responsibility by improving the quality and relevance of their education is by assuming in a more committed, conscious, systematic and planned way the training for the citizenship of the students. To develop the research, the analytical-synthetic and historical-logical methods were used as theoretical methods, and documentary review and direct observation were used as empirical methods. As a result of the research, the conclusion was reached that universities must turn their gaze towards themselves, reflect critically and self-critically on their reason for being in the current historical context of Latin American societies, to avoid the risk of falling into educational and institutional irrelevance and being less relevant to the new demands that society imposes on them in the 21st century.
