Abstract

The article investigates what refers to reading comprehension and its importance for Colombian secondary education. The aim is to explain the impact of reading on the understanding of texts in basic secondary education. A bibliographic study on reading comprehension is carried out. In this sense, educational institutions have a high responsibility as it is necessary to foster the reading habit in students that leads to the development of reading skills. Communication mediated by scientific text includes inherent thought processes such as the interpretation of what is read, with emphasis on the teaching process. It is concluded that the requirements for reading ability are: understanding and interpretation. Extensive reading encourages the development of reading skills.
